Coinbase Abandons 'Social Gamble': Base App Reverts to Coinbase Wallet, Pivots Fully to Omnichain Trading

BlockBeats news, September 11: Coinbase has rebranded its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet and shifted its product focus from social features to multi-chain trading.

Ryan Kass, Product Lead for Coinbase Wallet, said the rebranding signals a return to the product's positioning of "trading everything," meaning that in the future, users will be able to trade any asset through Wallet regardless of which blockchain it runs on. The product currently supports Solana, Hyperliquid perpetual contracts, and multi-chain tokenized stocks, among other assets.

Coinbase will also continue to use Wallet as a "test kitchen" for new assets and new trading experiences. Kass said that new products such as Robinhood Chain and Hyperliquid perpetuals often enter Wallet first, and once mature are further rolled out to Coinbase's retail trading platform.

This adjustment also means Coinbase is downplaying the previous "super app" approach of Base App. Base App was launched in 2025 and once sought to integrate crypto trading, social features, messaging, AI tools, and the creator economy, but growth in its social and creator token businesses previously fell short of expectations.

Now, Coinbase's competitive focus is refocusing on the trading gateway. Facing competition from emerging on-chain trading platforms such as Robinhood Chain, Coinbase hopes to turn Wallet into an on-chain trading gateway where "you can buy anything, anywhere" through multi-chain asset coverage.
