South Korea to Announce Over $100 Billion in Energy Investment in the U.S. to Support American AI Buildout

According to people familiar with the matter, the agreement has a potential value of more than $100 billion, with plans for South Korea to fund the construction of up to eight nuclear power plants and a natural gas project. Trump and Lee Jae-myung reached an agreement last October in which the United States reduced most tariffs from 25% to 15%, including on South Korea's auto industry. In exchange, South Korea pledged to invest $350 billion in the United States and purchase an additional $100 billion in American energy.

Previously, no projects had materialized, drawing dissatisfaction from U.S. officials including Trump. Trump threatened in January to raise tariffs on South Korea again. The two sides are now close to finalizing two agreements, which could be announced as early as next week. Negotiations are still ongoing, and investment details as well as the timing of the announcement may change.
