BlockBeats News, September 9 — U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent has challenged traders attempting to short the yen, claiming that he now effectively holds "insider information" when making market assessments.
Bessent stated: "Whenever someone says, 'Oh, the Treasury Secretary is taking a risk by doing this,' I think, this is exactly my dream, because I have asymmetric information."
Bessent, a former hedge fund executive, reviewed several instances where he intervened in markets, including the joint yen purchase with the Japanese government on July 31. At that time, the yen strengthened sharply but gradually gave back gains over subsequent trading sessions, partly because traders pointed out that the U.S. Treasury has limited foreign exchange purchasing funds at its disposal.
Bessent remarked: "Now I'm the one holding the cards, so when we intervene in the yen market, I have a fairly good read on what the Japanese government, the Bank of Japan, and Japanese policymakers will do. And if you want, you're welcome to bet against me."
