BlockBeats News, August 27th, according to Bloomberg, Kioxia and Western Digital plan to invest $31 billion in Japan to expand a memory chip factory. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Kioxia is planning to construct a new production facility at its Iwate Prefecture site in northeastern Japan to increase manufacturing capacity and meet the growing storage demand associated with artificial intelligence.
It is reported that this new factory will be the region's second plant and will produce the company's latest generation of high-density 3D flash memory chips. These chips are designed to help process the massive amounts of data generated by AI services. Kioxia began selling these stacked NAND chips last month, known as the 10th generation BiCS flash.
Furthermore, Kioxia and Western Digital will seek subsidies from the Japanese government. Japan has been providing financial support to companies such as TSMC, Sony Group, and Micron Technology to expand their chip manufacturing capacity within Japan.
