El Salvador Bitcoin Payment Experiment Nears Collapse, Core Developer Witnesses 'Bitcoin Beach' Payment Drought

He used BTC to pay for lunch at El Zonte's "Bitcoin Beach," where the cashier informed him that his payment was the first Bitcoin transaction at the store for the entire month. BTC transactions have shifted from being common to nearly non-existent locally. When Jon Atack tried to tip in sats, the cashier, who has worked there for three years, said they had forgotten how to use a Bitcoin wallet application and described the local payment scene as "dead." Some travelers have reported successful BTC payments in the same area, and sporadic signs of businesses accepting Bitcoin payments still exist in town, but daily transactions have significantly dwindled.

El Zonte was once the birthplace of El Salvador's Bitcoin story, where an anonymous donor started distributing Bitcoin to the small town in 2019. In 2021, El Salvador officially adopted BTC as legal tender. However, under an IMF loan agreement in 2024, El Salvador made merchant acceptance of Bitcoin voluntary, leading to a continued decline in on-chain payments. Despite Atack remaining optimistic about El Salvador's pioneering legislation and adoption, the payment fervor at the "Bitcoin Beach" has significantly waned.
