BlockBeats News, August 16th - Israel's largest licensed cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold experienced a data breach, with personal data of approximately 200,000 customers stolen by hackers, almost equivalent to the platform's entire user base. Bits of Gold is Israel's first cryptocurrency company to obtain a virtual asset service provider license, approved by regulators in September 2022.
The specific type of data leaked has not been disclosed yet, but cryptocurrency brokers usually collect a large amount of identity information in accordance with KYC regulations, including government-issued IDs, proof of address, and financial information. The leaked data could be used for phishing, SIM card hijacking, and social engineering attacks. In April this year, Bits of Gold was also approved to issue the BILS stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the Israeli Shekel.
