BlockBeats News, August 5th, according to WSJ, the hedge fund Situational Awareness, which plunged into crisis due to aggressive bets on AI assets, has attracted a luxurious LP lineup including top investors from Silicon Valley and Wall Street. However, its high-leverage strategy eventually triggered a liquidity crisis.
The report stated that Situational Awareness, founded by 24-year-old Leopold Aschenbrenner, quickly rose to prominence in the AI trading frenzy, with its AUM reaching $45 billion at one point, making it one of the fastest-growing hedge funds in recent years. The fund was previously dubbed the "AI Prophet" for betting on AI industry chain stocks. The fund's investor list includes:
· Dan Sundheim, Founder of D1 Capital Partners and a significant shareholder of SpaceX;
· Neil Mehta, Co-founder of Greenoaks and a Silicon Valley investor;
· Gaurav Kapadia's XN Foundation;
· Feroz Dewan, former Head of Public Markets at Tiger Global;
· Patrick Collison and John Collison, Co-founders of Stripe;
· Daniel Gross and Nat Friedman, leaders of Meta AI;
· Quant trading giant Jane Street.
However, Situational Awareness recently suffered a severe blow due to its high-leverage bets on AI assets. The fund heavily borrowed to invest in AI-related stocks. After a significant drop in some positions in July triggered margin calls from lenders, the fund was forced to raise funds and ultimately sold most of its public equity portfolio to Citadel.
The report noted that some investors had previously warned about the founder's high-leverage strategy and raised concerns about its risk management capabilities. Aksia, an institution providing research services to pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices, had warned investors in a 2025 assessment that Situational Awareness might face the risk of "overconfidence leading to risk management issues."
Situational Awareness had disclosed in its fundraising documents that its investment strategy "does not limit the type of positions held, position sizes, investment concentration, or the degree of leverage used."
Unlike traditional large hedge funds that are mainly composed of institutional investors, Situational Awareness' LP structure consists more of high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and foundations. Some institutional investors remain cautious due to the founder's lack of a long-term track record.
Currently, the fund has still achieved approximately an 80% year-to-date return, holding private assets of AI companies such as Anthropic, Fluidstack, and MatX. However, market attention has shifted to whether its high leverage will further expose the credit risk behind the AI investment frenzy.
