Codex is transforming into a voice assistant: chatting with users in the front end while continuing to work in the background

According to Dynamic Beating monitoring, OpenAI is preparing real-time voice mode for Codex. Users will be able to have continuous conversations with it while delegating time-consuming tasks to a background Agent.

Publicly available Codex code indicates that the feature has been in development for several months. Voice conversations can be tied to existing task threads and communicated through a WebRTC or WebSocket connection. During background task execution, users can also continue to add requests or adjust the direction.

The latest exposed Codex client resource strings indicate that the real-time voice interface will display states such as command execution, file modification, MCP calls, and permission approval. The exposed cue words for coordination also mention tasks such as browsing, applications, documents, shopping, and ordering food. OpenAI has not officially confirmed these features.

Tibo, the product lead at OpenAI, wrote today, "Feeling very Codex tomorrow." As a result, the community speculates that this feature may be released as early as July 24.
