According to Dynamic Beating Monitor, OpenAI's Chief Futurist, Joshua Achiam, has announced his departure from the company, with the 24th of this month being his last day. He publicly shared his farewell message to the internal Slack on X, stating that his resignation has no specific cause, nor was it triggered by a particular event. Instead, after thinking for some time, he believes he can now continue to advance the mission of safe AGI beyond the frontier lab.
Achiam joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017, where he has since been deeply involved in AI safety research and served as the head of the Mission Alignment Team. In February of this year, following the dissolution of the Mission Alignment Team at OpenAI, he transitioned to Chief Futurist, focusing on researching the impact of AGI and more powerful AI on society, policy, and security.
In his farewell message, he remarked that the past nine years have felt like "a century of change in a decade," emphasizing that the future depends on the collective choices made around AGI and superintelligence. OpenAI has not yet announced who will take on this role.
