Microsoft is replacing OpenAI and Anthropic with proprietary AI technology in some applications.

BlockBeats News, July 8: Microsoft is accelerating its efforts to achieve AI self-reliance, aiming to reduce reliance on external models and costs. According to sources, some office applications such as Excel and Outlook have started using Microsoft's in-house MAI model to process AI requests. Currently, tens of thousands of calls are made weekly, whereas these applications previously relied more on OpenAI and Anthropic models.

Although MAI currently accounts for a small proportion of overall AI calls, it demonstrates that Microsoft is gradually implementing its in-house models into core products. Microsoft's AI lead, Mustafa Suleyman, previously stated that the company aims to reduce and eventually eliminate spending on Anthropic models. In addition to office software, the MAI model has been integrated into GitHub Copilot, and the in-house speech-to-text model will also be applied to products such as Teams in the coming months.

As Microsoft's favorable partnership with OpenAI gradually expires, the company is speeding up the development of its independent AI capabilities to enhance bargaining power and further reduce inference costs.
