SemiAnalysis: YMTC has become the world's fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer, but it is difficult to change the memory shortage situation in the short term

BlockBeats News, June 30th, Semiconductor and AI independent research firm SemiAnalysis published an article stating that ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has now become the world's fourth-largest DRAM participant, putting greater pressure on storage suppliers such as SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron. Despite the company expanding its capacity and potentially further increasing it in the coming months with significant cash flow accumulation, CXMT still faces key challenges in terms of equipment, technology, and market.

On the equipment side, CXMT still faces various export controls on advanced semiconductor equipment related to DRAM and HBM production, including EUV lithography, advanced etch tools, and TSV-related equipment. CXMT faces challenges in multiple manufacturing steps, each requiring different equipment capabilities, process maturity, and integration experience. In terms of technology, CXMT's DRAM process technology lags behind leading vendors by several generations, with an even greater gap in the HBM field. As advanced equipment plays an increasingly critical role in the next-generation DRAM expansion, this challenge may become more difficult over time.

CXMT's rise should not be seen as a storage cycle-ending factor or a imminent threat to leading storage manufacturers, but rather as a long-term structural competitive force. In the short term, the scale of the DRAM supply shortage is too large, and CXMT's incremental output is unlikely to substantially alleviate the market; this supercycle is still defined by restricted supply, increasing storage content, HBM wafer absorption, and accelerated AI-driven demand.
