OpenAI Codex Abuse Prevention Mechanism Misjudgment Leads to Rapid Depletion of Quotas, Officially Resets All User Quotas Immediately

According to Dynamic AI Monitor, Tibo Sottiaux, Core Product Lead at OpenAI, stated that due to a misjudgment of the built-in anti-fraud and anti-abuse mechanism, users' quotas were rapidly depleted. The official has urgently reset the usage limits for all Codex users for free.

The abnormal quota depletion issue actually began around June 16 and erupted on social media on June 25. Hundreds of developers provided feedback on GitHub and social media platforms, reporting a drastic increase in Codex Token consumption rate, with some accounts seeing their quota deplete 10 to 20 times faster than usual. Some paid users subscribed to the $200/month plan reported that the additional $40 temporary quota was exhausted within 3 to 4 hours. Other developers mentioned that the budget quota, which was initially estimated to support 5 hours of work, was completely exhausted after just a few interactions with the prompts. Due to a delayed response from the OpenAI development team, numerous developers expressed strong protests on social media.

In response to user protests, Vaibhav, a member of the OpenAI technical team, first publicly collected users' feedback identifiers. Subsequently, Sottiaux acknowledged that the anti-abuse system might have made misjudgments and pledged to follow up. In the latest quota reset announcement, Sottiaux emphasized that the team had implemented initial mitigation measures. Despite the fact that internal investigations showed a relatively small number of affected users, the official decision was made to reset the usage limits for all Codex users for free and continue to monitor the system status.
