According to Dynamic Beating monitoring, OpenAI's economics paper titled "The Shift to Agentic AI: Evidence from Codex" reveals a transformation in the knowledge work model by tracking data from the Codex intelligent agent platform. The basic unit of work is shifting from single interactions to asynchronously delegating longer and more complex tasks to AI.
Within OpenAI, intelligent agents have completely taken over daily tasks, with the traditional ChatGPT chat interface nearing obsolescence. As of June 2026, 99.8% of the Tokens generated weekly by internal employees are from Codex. Among these, engineers have a Codex Token per capita ratio of 99%, while non-technical staff such as legal and recruiting have ratios exceeding 85%. Intensive usage has led employees to operate AI like coordinating teams, with nearly 28.6% of employees having managed 5 or more intelligent agents simultaneously. The most heavily engaged employees accumulate an average daily runtime of over 71 hours.
Compared to OpenAI's extreme scenario, external users are also rapidly shifting towards intelligent agents. A sample of human work tasks estimated to take over 8 hours submitted by external individual users has risen from 2.1% to 25.6% in the past six months. Since August 2025, the number of non-developer weekly active users for external individuals and organizations has surged by 137 times and 189 times, respectively. Additionally, the usage of Skills, a workflow-centric feature, among all active Codex users has jumped from 5.4% to 26.6% in three months.
