BlockBeats News, June 20th - According to Reuters, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere stated on Friday that Norway will implement an almost complete ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools by elementary school students, while also restricting older students' use of AI in education to prevent its negative impact on learning. Faced with a general decline in educational test scores, the Norwegian government has banned students from using smartphones in schools starting in 2024 and has given teachers more authority to maintain classroom discipline.
Stoere stated at a press conference on Friday that the use of AI could lead young students to skip some crucial steps in the learning process. He also mentioned that the new regulations will officially take effect starting from the new school year at the end of August.
According to the guidelines published by the Norwegian government: AI tools should not be used in principle in the primary school stage (ages 6 to 13); in the middle school stage (ages 14 to 16), AI tools may be used cautiously under teacher supervision; and in the high school stage (ages 17 to 19), students should learn how to use AI correctly to prepare for further education and entry into the workforce.
The Norwegian government believes that although AI has potential value, early reliance on AI for young students may weaken fundamental skills such as reading, writing, math, and critical thinking. Therefore, through age-appropriate management, the government aims to ensure learning quality while fostering the necessary AI skills for the future.
