Claude Bids Farewell to the Anonymous Era: Anthropic Will Introduce Real-Name Face Scanning, Allowing Data Sharing with Law Enforcement Without a Warrant

BlockBeats News, June 15th, Anthropic recently sent a privacy policy update notification to users, announcing the implementation of a new version of the Terms of Service starting from July 8, 2026. The new policy will not only introduce real-name and facial identity verification but also lower the threshold for disclosing user data to law enforcement agencies, marking a further end to the era of anonymity in large-scale model services.

According to the new rules, in specific scenarios such as detecting account abuse, violations, or suspected minor use, Anthropic may require identity verification from Claude Free, Pro, and Max individual users. The verification process will be conducted through a third-party compliance service provider called Persona, where users must upload government-issued ID documents and take real-time selfies for comparison. Anthropic emphasizes that the biometric and ID data uploaded by users will not be stored on Anthropic's own servers and will not be used for model training or marketing.

A more critical change is the adjustment to the data sharing terms. The old policy only required the disclosure of user data in cases of "legal compulsion." The new rule has been modified to state that as long as Anthropic has "good faith belief" that disclosure is "reasonably necessary" to prevent physical harm, fraud, illegal activity, or uphold platform terms, they can voluntarily share user conversation logs and data with law enforcement or government agencies. The adjustment to the data sharing terms applies only to individual consumer-level accounts, with enterprise and API customer data still protected by commercial confidentiality terms.

As early as June 9th, Anthropic had already implemented a 30-day mandatory data retention policy for the most powerful models such as Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to investigate any jailbreaking activity. While user verification and proactive sharing clauses have long been standard among tech giants like OpenAI and Google, the recent export restrictions on the most powerful models and the account ban of Fable 5 have led to a series of security tightening actions by Anthropic. This has prompted sensitive users and businesses to reassess Claude's privacy boundaries.
