According to Dynamic Beating monitoring, Clive Chan, an early member of OpenAI's custom chip team and the company's second hardware employee, has announced his departure from OpenAI. This week, he joined Anthropic to work on custom chip and hardware-software co-design.
Chan stated that he is extremely proud to have witnessed the team grow into a top-notch chip design force over the past two and a half years. While Chan could not disclose more chip details, he noted that based on OpenAI's past collaboration with Broadcom, the custom chip project is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2026.
The reason that prompted Chan's departure was the irresistible lure of "starting from scratch to climb a new peak." Prior to joining OpenAI, Chan was involved in the development of Tesla's Dojo supercomputer.
