NVIDIA Bets Over $6.5 Billion on Photonics Technology to Boost AI Infrastructure and Tackle "Data Transfer Bottleneck"

BlockBeats News, May 30th, NVIDIA has committed to invest at least $6.5 billion in photonics and optical networking-related companies since March this year to address the data transmission and energy consumption bottlenecks faced by AI data centers.

It is reported that NVIDIA has invested $2 billion each in Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell, and allocated $500 million to Corning for the development of optical interconnect systems. NVIDIA has also participated in Ayar Labs, an optical startup, in a $500 million Series E financing round.

Photonics technology utilizes light signals to transmit data instead of traditional copper wire electrical signals, which can significantly increase bandwidth and reduce energy consumption. It is seen as the core infrastructure of the next-generation AI data center. As AI model scales continue to grow, the demand for data exchange between thousands of GPUs has surged, and network interconnection is becoming a new bottleneck after computational chip performance.

In March this year, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated at the GTC conference that the company is accelerating the application of silicon photonics technology in network platforms and GPU interconnection systems, and the related production capacity demand far exceeds the current global supply capacity.

Analysts point out that the demand for high-speed optical interconnects in AI cabinet systems is rapidly increasing, and the optical module, laser, and optical fiber industries are expected to continue to benefit. Driven by NVIDIA's investment, Lumentum's stock price has risen by over 130% this year, while Coherent and Marvell have also shown significant strength.
