The search box can write code on the spot! Google Search Upgrade: Automatically Build Apps, Can Even Make Calls for Users

At the Google I/O event on May 19, 2026, Google officially announced a major evolution in Search: within one year of launch, AI Modes with over 1 billion monthly active users will receive a default free upgrade to the Gemini 3.5 Flash model. For the first time, it will integrate the Antigravity programming framework, allowing users to write code on the fly within the search box, generate real-time custom Mini Apps, and simulation emulators based on user needs.

The most groundbreaking aspect of this upgrade is the "Generative UI" for live coding. When users search for complex concepts or tasks requiring long-term tracking, Search will not only provide text answers but also write code in the background and dynamically render an interactive component (such as a gear-rotating simulation emulator or interactive data chart) on the spot.

For tasks like wedding planning, moving progress, or fitness check-ins that require long-term repetitive searches, Search can even write code from scratch for users and package it into a personalized Mini App or dashboard. This app will automatically fetch data from Google Maps, real-time weather, local reviews APIs, allowing users to save them for long-term use.

The search box itself has received its most significant upgrade in 25 years: supporting multi-modal mixed inputs such as text, images, videos, files, and Chrome tabs, along with intelligent AI word suggestions.

Furthermore, Search has officially entered the era of intelligent agents. The "Information Agent" can continuously scan the entire web in the cloud backend 24/7 and immediately notify users when meeting complex criteria (such as finding a house within budget and desired school district or a limited release sneaker). The "Booking Agent" can seamlessly book complex local services with a single click. One of the most disruptive features is in the US region, where users can directly ask Google to "call businesses on your behalf" to schedule beauty or home services directly.

Currently, the default upgrade to Gemini 3.5 Flash AI Mode has been globally launched. The "Information Agent" and "Live-Crafted Mini Apps" will debut this summer in the US region for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The "Call Representation" and "One-Click Booking" functions will also roll out across the US region this summer.
