Suspected of Using OpenAI to Pump Personal Investments? U.S. House of Representatives Launches Formal Investigation into Sam Altman

According to Singularity Watch monitoring, the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee has sent a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, formally initiating an investigation into potential conflicts of interest between his personal investments and company operations. The key focus of this investigation is whether he used OpenAI's funds to artificially inflate the market valuation of his personal holding company.

From the "Board Coup" at the end of 2023 to OpenAI's recent pivot, Sam Altman's blurred boundary between investor and executive roles has always been an internal governance risk. The congressional intervention marks the escalation of this conflict into a federal regulatory focus.

According to the disclosed letter, the House has identified several specific facts:
- $500 million internal investment proposal: Sam Altman had proposed that OpenAI invest around $500 million in the fusion startup Helion. In 2021, he personally invested $375 million in the company.
- 6x valuation increase: This proposed transaction would increase Helion's valuation to around $35 billion, a more than 6x increase in book value.
- Employee reluctance to participate: Some OpenAI employees felt "uneasy" about the investment deal and actively avoided the internal Slack channel used to discuss the transaction, citing concerns that their current remarks could be involved in future litigation.
- Management ties to interests: The letter also points out that OpenAI President Greg Brockman not only holds shares in two of Sam Altman's investment companies but also has a stake in his family fund.

The committee has requested OpenAI to appoint its "Audit Committee" and other relevant personnel for a briefing by May 22 and submit all policy documents and internal communication records related to preventing executive conflicts of interest from 2015 to the present.
