Oscar Award New Rule: AI-Generated Actors and Scripts Will No Longer Be Eligible for Consideration

According to Pulse Beating monitoring, as reported by TechCrunch, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars, unveiled new award rules on Friday, with several provisions specifically addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence.

The Academy stated that only performances explicitly completed by humans and listed in the film's official credits are eligible for Oscar consideration, with the requirement that they be "achieved through human effort and skill." Similarly, scripts must be "created by a human" to qualify for consideration. The Academy also indicated that it has the right to request additional information from filmmakers regarding the use of AI and the "degree of human involvement" in the creative process.

These rule adjustments come at a time when the industry is seeing several AI-related cases, such as an independent film in production using an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer's likeness; AI "actor" Tilly Norwood making frequent headlines; and concerns raised by some filmmakers about new video generation models. The issue of AI was a key point of contention during the 2023 actors and writers strike.

Outside of Hollywood, a novel was recalled by its publisher due to suspicions of AI involvement, and certain U.S. writers' organizations have announced that AI-generated works will no longer be eligible for award consideration.
