According to Dynamic Beating monitoring, OpenAI has added a "Codex Pets" feature to the Codex desktop version, allowing users to have an animated pet on the interface. By typing /pet in the editor, you can summon your pet. This appears to be an Easter egg, but in reality, it is an agent status overlay: the pet hovers as a layer above other applications, providing real-time updates on the current status of the Codex thread (running, awaiting input, under review) and a progress summary. This way, you don't have to keep switching back to Codex to see where the agent has progressed to after changing windows.
Several preset pets are included, but you can also use the hatch-pet skill to let the AI auto-generate a custom pet based on your project, complete with species, personality, rarity, and other attributes.
