The US Senate Rejects Limitation on Trump's Authority to Strike Iran, 60-Day War Powers Deadline Looms

BlockBeats News, May 1st, the U.S. Senate rejected the sixth Democratic attempt to limit President Trump's authority to wage war against Iran. As the conflict approached a critical 60-day deadline, Republicans continued to firmly stand by the Trump administration.

On Thursday, a procedural vote led by California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff to advance a war powers resolution was rejected with 47 votes in favor and 50 against. The resolution would have directed the President to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran.

The 1973 War Powers Resolution stipulates that if Congress has not authorized the use of military force, the President must withdraw armed forces after 60 days. This 60-day period starts from the President's formal notification to Congress. President Trump wrote to Congress on March 2nd, notifying them of hostilities with Iran, which meant the 60-day period would end on May 1st (Friday). The President can extend the deadline by 30 days for troop withdrawal.
