According to Perceptron Beating monitoring, during his state visit to the United States, King Charles III of the United Kingdom met with six American tech titans at the Blair House in Washington, D.C.: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, AMD CEO Lisa Su, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, and Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat. The discussion revolved around the funding challenges faced by UK university spin-off startups.
Charles described these entrepreneurs as "always the most difficult to get off the ground, falling into the dreaded valley of death." Huang responded by mentioning the enormous opportunities in the field of AI and quantum robotics, emphasizing the need for a more active venture capital landscape and entrepreneurial culture in the UK. Charles jokingly remarked, "You are all deadly competitors," to which Huang replied, "No one needs to die," prompting Charles to ask, "Really?" eliciting laughter from the audience. Bezos shared the story of founding Amazon in 1995, raising only $50,000 at a time and facing rejection from 40 investors. Charles commented, "Those 40 individuals are now regretting it," drawing a parallel between the investors who missed out on Amazon and the publishers who rejected publishing 'Harry Potter' years ago.
During President Trump's visit to the UK in September last year, companies such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, Google, and OpenAI pledged to invest £31 billion (approximately $42 billion) in the UK over the coming years, covering AI, quantum computing, and civilian nuclear power. That evening, the aforementioned tech leaders attended a state banquet at the White House held in Charles' honor.
