According to Sensor Tower estimates, global consumer spending in non-game mobile apps reached a record $32 billion in the first quarter of 2021. This marks a 40% increase year-over-year from the $23 billion spent in Q1 2020. The App Store maintained its lead, accounting for approximately $21 billion of the total, while Google Play saw about $11 billion in consumer spending.
The top-grossing non-game app worldwide for Q1 2021 was TikTok, with an estimated $480 million in user spending. YouTube, Tinder, Tencent Video, and Disney+ rounded out the top five. These figures demonstrate the continued growth and monetization potential of non-game mobile apps, particularly within the social media and entertainment categories.
