Analysis: Trump's Approval Rating May Slightly Increase Following White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting

BlockBeats News, April 26th - Following the White House Correspondents' Association dinner shooting incident, U.S. President Trump's public statement at the White House press briefing took on a tone of "restraint and unity," which was notably different from his usual rhetoric. This has sparked discussions among observers about his team's midterm election strategy adjustment. Historically, assassination attempts on incumbent leaders usually lead to a short-term increase in approval ratings. After Reagan was shot in 1981, his approval rating briefly rose to around 70%. Similarly, Trump's approval rating saw a slight uptick after the July 2024 Butler Rally shooting incident. However, this event occurred during a downward cycle of Trump's support: A Morning Consult poll from April 17th to 20th showed Trump's approval rating at 44% and disapproval rating at 53%, remaining in the negative territory for several weeks.

Industry analysis believes that Trump's rare "restraint + unity" wording this time may indicate that his team has begun to adjust his image for the November 2026 midterm elections. With approximately 6 months until election day, the marginal benefit of using divisive rhetoric is relatively limited, while the strategy of appealing to swing voters and reducing the Republican net disapproval rate has more room to maneuver. Senior Republicans, including House Speaker Johnson and House Majority Leader Scalise, have predominantly expressed a tone of "prayer and gratitude for law enforcement," refraining from making partisan accusatory statements, showing a coordinated convergence in the overall camp rhetoric.

However, the uncertainty remains as to whether the event can substantially reverse Trump's downward trend in approval ratings. On one hand, the "rally effect" usually lasts only a few weeks before fading, and the 6-month time window before election day may significantly diminish the political utility of this event. On the other hand, the current top-ranking voter concerns — healthcare costs (ranked as the top issue by 72% of voters) and the economy (Republicans have a net sentiment of -33 on this issue, the lowest across all issues) — are not favorable to the Republicans and are not directly related to the narrative of this event. The FBI's investigation into the motive of the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen (31 years old, from Torrance, California), will be a key point to observe whether the "unity" tone can be sustained.
