BlockBeats News, April 23rd. According to The Block, Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, stated that the U.S. government is running a node on the Bitcoin network as part of a military exercise focusing on network security and defense.
Paparo responded to a question about the national security implications of Bitcoin posed by Republican Congressman Lance Gooden during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, saying, "Right now we're in an experimentation phase, we are running a node on the Bitcoin network, not to mine, but to monitor it, and conduct various operational tests, leveraging the Bitcoin protocol to secure and defend the network."
Paparo made it clear that the military's interest is at a technical level. He told the lawmakers that Bitcoin's value to the U.S. warfighting capability lies in "cryptography, blockchain, and reusable proof of work," as a tool that can enhance both cybersecurity and power projection. He stated, "From a military application standpoint, my interest in Bitcoin is as a computer science tool."
