Claude Code's Usage Transformed with Opus 4.7: No Longer Just for Pair Programming Partners, Hand off the Entire Task at Once

According to Dynamic Watch Beating monitoring, Anthropic has released a User Guide for Claude Code in conjunction with Opus 4.7, with the core recommendation being a shift in interaction approach: to treat Claude as your delegated-task engineer rather than a line-by-line guidance pair-programming partner. This is because Opus 4.7 performs more inference after each user utterance to enhance coherence and instruction-following capability, but the side effect is that each additional round of conversation increases token costs. The most effective usage is to clearly state the task intent, constraints, acceptance criteria, and relevant document locations in the first round, and then let the model take over.

Opus 4.7 no longer supports Fixed Thinking Budget but introduces "Adaptive Thinking," where the model autonomously determines whether each step requires deep reasoning, providing a quick response for simple queries and only engaging in deep thinking for complex questions. Users can still adjust the thinking depth through cue phrases such as "This question is harder than it looks, please think step by step" or "Prioritize quick responses, no need for deep reasoning."

Opus 4.7 defaults to fewer tool invocations, launches the sub-agent more conservatively, and automatically adjusts reply length based on task complexity (responses are shorter for simple questions compared to Opus 4.6). These changes generally yield better results in most scenarios, but if the workflow relies on frequent file searches or parallel sub-agents, specific instructions should be provided in the cue phrases. The default reasoning level of Claude Code has been upgraded from high to the new xhigh (between high and max), with Anthropic recommending the use of this level for most programming and agent tasks.
