OpenAI Completes Next-Gen Model SPUD Pretraining, Altman Steps Down from Security Role to Build Data Center

According to 1M AI News monitoring, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced during an all-hands meeting that the company's next-generation flagship model, codenamed Spud, has completed pre-training and is expected to have a "very strong model" in "a few weeks," with Altman stating that the team believes it can "really accelerate the economy."

Altman also announced the transition of the AI Safety team to Chief Research Officer Mark Chen's research division, the Information Security team to the "scaling" department led by co-founder and president Greg Brockman, and his own focus on fundraising, the supply chain, and the "unprecedented scale construction of data centers." Executive Fidji Simo will lead the product department, which has been renamed to "AGI Deployment." OpenAI informed employees last week that ChatGPT, the Programming Agent Codex, and the Browser Atlas will be merged into a desktop "super app."
