xAI's Macrohard Project Hits Roadblock: Leadership Exodus, 600-strong Data Team on Hold, Focus Shifts to Tesla Digital Optimus

According to 1M AI News, xAI's core AI Agent project Macrohard has hit a roadblock. Announced by Musk in August last year, the project's name is a play on "Microsoft," with the goal of using AI to simulate the white-collar work of an entire software company. Since its inception, the project has experienced frequent changes in leadership and struggled to scale. After two Macrohard leaders resigned in February, Musk announced during an all-hands meeting that xAI co-founder Toby Pohlen would take over, but Pohlen announced his departure from xAI just 16 days later. Among nearly 20 xAI engineers on LinkedIn who have listed Macrohard-related positions, most have either resigned or changed roles in the past few months, with over a dozen leaving in just the past month. Currently, there are no Macrohard-related positions listed on the xAI recruitment page.

Meanwhile, a Macrohard data collection project involving over 600 AI annotators was put on hold last month. These contractors were previously asked to screen record their work and leisure activities to train AI to mimic human behavior. The project manager informed the workers in early February that "researchers identified many flaws in the model that need adjustments in the model and data collection approach," indicating a resumption in two to four weeks, but as of this week, it has not yet restarted.

Tesla is taking over this direction. Internal sources report that some Macrohard work and computing power have been shifted to the Tesla Autopilot team. Internally, Tesla is developing an AI Agent called "Digital Optimus" (in line with its Optimus humanoid robot project started in 2021) and has been hiring engineers for this purpose, aiming to achieve "autonomous software interaction, code generation, and real-time decision-making." Unlike Macrohard's primarily static screenshot-based analysis, Digital Optimus adopts a real-time video streaming approach similar to Full Self-Driving (FSD), enabling AI to continuously process information and respond, rather than taking sequential actions after frame-by-frame screenshots. Musk posted after the news broke that Macrohard/Digital Optimus is a joint project between xAI and Tesla, part of Tesla's $2 billion investment agreement with xAI announced in January.
