BlockBeats News, March 5th, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI signed a non-binding "User Protection Commitment" on Wednesday local time, pledging to "self-build, procure, or purchase" the energy needed to operate data center construction to ensure that the associated costs are not passed on to ordinary consumers to prevent a rise in electricity prices for U.S. residents. It is currently unclear how the White House will ensure that companies fulfill the commitment.
Trump said that the public is concerned that data center construction will drive up electricity prices, but he promised that this would not happen. The power consumption of AI data centers in some parts of the United States has already exceeded the existing supply capacity, and it is estimated that by 2028, data center power consumption may account for 12% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that residential electricity prices are projected to increase by 6% in 2025 and are expected to continue to rise through 2027 and 2028.
