Star's response to CZ: Equating DEX and CEX is not being open, but an attempt to avoid responsibility

BlockBeats News, February 10, OKX Star responded to CZ, saying, "At first glance, this statement seems to make sense, but it is actually a flawed analogy. DEX and CEX fundamentally play completely different roles. Open, permissionless access belongs to DEX; whereas responsibility, standards, and accountability belong to CEX.

DEX is a purely self-custodial tool. The service provider is not an intermediary and does not control user funds. Users interacting with DEX should or should already understand that they are simply using a tool and must take full responsibility for their actions. As US SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said, 'The right to self-custody personal property is a foundational American value that should not disappear when logging onto the Internet.'

In contrast, CEX custodies user funds, somewhat akin to a bank. Therefore, they need to assume explicit obligations, including AML, sanctions compliance, anti-fraud, and consumer protection. CEX is not a neutral 'pipe' but is an intermediary that trusts, assumes operational responsibility, and therefore has an obligation to protect users rather than simply list all existing assets. Equating DEX with CEX is not openness but an attempt to evade responsibility. This fundamental distinction also reflects the longstanding differences in values between OKX and Binance."

Earlier reports indicated that CZ responded on X platform to "Cryptocurrency exchanges should stop listing endless meme coins to make the industry look more legitimate," stating, "It's a good thing for DEX to list all tokens, while it is considered bad for CEX to list all tokens. Exchanges should provide access to all assets. The reason some tokens that users like are not listed is that each exchange has its own listing review framework (and these criteria may change over time)."
