Reuters Warns: Trump's Economic Messaging Chaos May Drag Down Republican Midterm Hopes

2026-02-10 01:45

BlockBeats News, February 10th, Reuters analysis pointed out that Trump's communication on inflation and the cost of living is off track, posing a risk to the upcoming midterm elections for the Republican Party. Several Republican strategists and former government economic officials have warned that Trump may be repeating Biden's mistakes during a period of high inflation, damaging his and the Republican Party's credibility on the most important economic issues for voters.

The report stated that in five economic speeches since last December, Trump has claimed nearly 20 times that inflation has been defeated and nearly 30 times that prices are falling, but the actual data does not support this claim according to public perception. The inflation rate has remained close to 3% over the past year, with everyday expenses such as food continuing to rise: ground beef prices have risen by 18%, and ground coffee by 29% year-on-year.

Reuters' analysis shows that in about 5 hours of speeches, Trump has spent nearly half the time deviating from economic topics, frequently shifting to immigration, foreign affairs, and attacks on political enemies. There are concerns within the Republican Party that his self-proclaimed "intermittent" speaking style is obscuring his core economic message, making it difficult for voters to form a clear understanding.

Republican strategists bluntly state that if Trump continues to make disconnected comments from reality before the November midterm elections, he may drag down Republican candidates in key swing districts. Polls show that only about 35% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the economy, significantly lower than his initial levels upon taking office.

Several former government economic officials believe that the most critical thing for a president in an election year is to demonstrate an understanding of voters' economic challenges. They warn that ignoring this point is precisely why Biden lost in the 2024 election.
