South Korea's Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office Suspected of Losing Seized 70 Billion KRW Worth of Bitcoin, Currently Under Internal Investigation

BlockBeats News, January 25th. According to Korean media Ohmy News, the Gwangju Regional Prosecution Service in South Korea recently lost a large amount of Bitcoin that was seized and stored due to criminal cases. The specific amount of the lost Bitcoin has not been disclosed, but it is understood to be worth billions of Korean won. The prosecutors are conducting an internal investigation.

The Gwangju Regional Prosecution Service discovered the loss during a routine check to see if there were any abnormalities in the seized financial assets. At that time, they were inspecting Bitcoin-related passwords stored on a USB drive. A prosecution official stated, "We learned that the incident occurred when checking the seized Bitcoin, and inadvertently accessed a so-called 'fake (fraud) website.' Internally, the prosecutors discussed that the value of the lost Bitcoin could be as high as 70 billion Korean won."

In response to media inquiries, an official from the Gwangju Regional Prosecution Service stated, "We cannot confirm this."
