According to prosecutors, they have ensured that the man does not have access to the bitcoins.

German prosecutors seized 1,700 Bitcoins from a convicted fraudster, but police repeatedly failed to crack the password after the man remained silent while he was in jail, Reuters reported. "We asked him, but he didn't say," the prosecutor, Sebastian Murer, told the press. "Maybe he didn't know."

It is understood that the fraudster was sentenced to more than two years in prison for secretly installing software on other people's computers that used the computing power of those computers to "mine" bitcoin. That would be worth about $68 million at current prices.

However, according to prosecutors, they have ensured that the man does not have access to the bitcoins, but it is unclear how the police did this.
