Severe Ice and Snow Weather in the Southern United States Could Significantly Impact Bitcoin Mining Operations

BlockBeats News, January 23rd. According to Cointelegraph, a winter storm threatening much of the southern United States could result in Bitcoin miners shutting down operations. The U.S.-based weather forecasting company AccuWeather stated on Thursday that this "major winter storm" could span 1800 miles, stretching from the far western tip of Texas to the mid-Atlantic coast, affecting over 60 million people.

Historically, when large storms have disrupted the grid, Bitcoin miners have voluntarily reduced activity to help ease the grid's burden. In 2022, during a major winter storm in Texas, cryptocurrency miners in the state voluntarily scaled back operations.

Bitcoin environmental, social, and governance researcher Daniel Batten stated that as extreme weather events become more common globally, the need for balancing Bitcoin mining loads will increase, especially as more solar and wind power come online.
