Coinbase spokesperson: Prior to being sued, the SEC did not request the removal of any specific assets.
According to a report by Blockworks on August 1st, in the latest statement from Coinbase and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), prior to the SEC's lawsuit against Coinbase, the SEC did not require Coinbase to delist any specific assets. A Coinbase spokesperson stated that a Financial Times article reporting that "Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the SEC had demanded the halt of all cryptocurrency trading except for Bitcoin" was an "inaccurate representation of facts". The SEC never required Coinbase to delist any specific assets before the lawsuit was filed, as acknowledged by the SEC in the same article. The interview published by the Financial Times overlooked important background information regarding Coinbase's conversation with the SEC. The Coinbase spokesperson explained that the request for Coinbase to delist all assets except for Bitcoin was only the opinion of some SEC staff members at the time, and not the view of the wider committee. Such requests can only be made after a majority vote by the committee members themselves. The SEC spokesperson stated in the latest statement that "SEC staff will not ask a company to delist crypto assets. During an investigation, staff may express their views on which actions may raise questions under securities laws to the Commission."
