· $APE doing Gas? Arbitrum proposal gains support from ApeCoin DAO community
· Who is Horizen Labs?
· Arbitrum and Optimism competing for ApeChain?
On December 8th, Nina Rong, the ecosystem development lead of the Arbitrum Foundation, proposed in the ApeCoin DAO community that ApeChain adopt Arbitrum technology and be led in growth by Horizen Labs. Currently, the proposal is still in preliminary discussion, but it is worth noting that the proposal has been marked as "High Importance" by Messari.

It is reported that the members who proposed this proposal include Nina Rong, the ecosystem development director of the Arbitrum Foundation, Robert Viglione, co-founder and CEO of Horizen Labs, Hervé Larren, senior advisor of Horizen Labs, Steven Goldfeder, co-founder and CEO of Offchain Labs, and A.J. Warner, Chief Strategy Officer of Offchain Labs. In other words, this proposal was led by Arbitrum, with the participation of Horizen Labs and Offchain Labs, the research and development team of Arbitrum.

The proposal states that Arbitrum "is motivated to build ApeChain as an Arbitrum Orbit chain using AnyTrust technology." What is most noteworthy is that the proposal believes that ApeChain will become an extension of the ApeCoin DAO community after its launch and will quickly become the cornerstone of the Ape brand: "This also means that ApeChain should use $APE as its native gas token."

The proposal also pointed out that if ApeCoin DAO uses Arbitrum technology to develop ApeChain, the advantages it can obtain include: ApeCoin DAO can choose to add transaction (tx) collateral to generate income for the DAO; low cost; achieve customizability; and achieve self-executing governance.
In the comments section of the proposal, Nina Rong also mentioned that "if Arbitrum technology is adopted, the Arbitrum Foundation would be happy to provide funding." Some members of the ApeCoin DAO community expressed support for the proposal and believed that using $APE as gas was a wise and reasonable choice.

Among the proposers of this proposal, Horizen Labs is worth paying attention to. Horizen Labs was established in 2019 and is mainly responsible for creating the ApeCoin DAO staking system. Prior to this, Horizen Labs helped the ApeCoin DAO community launch several major initiatives, including ApeCoin, Otherside, and ApeStake within the Ape ecosystem.
In addition, Horizen Labs recently established governance for the EVM-driven platform Horizen EON as a technical service provider supporting Horizen DAO, further demonstrating Horizen Labs' expertise in creating new ecosystems.

Therefore, the proposal states that Horizen Labs is also committed to being a long-term holder and supporter of ApeCoin: "Horizen Labs will leverage its deep industry experience to provide advice and guidance to the ApeCoin DAO and community on the initial development of the ApeChain ecosystem."
Specifically, Horizen Labs will provide support for the launch of cross-chain $APE using the OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) standard on the LayerZero protocol, and provide technical support; establish connections between multiple foundations and other DAOs to continuously expand the ecosystem; and provide technical support for projects issuing tokens on ApeChain.
Before Nina Rong proposed that ApeChain use Arbitrum technology, Lumberg, a founding member of MetaCartel Ventures, also launched a proposal on the ApeCoin DAO website on November 22nd, suggesting that ApeChain be deployed on Optimism. The proposal was made.
This proposal hopes that ApeChain will become a part of the Optimism superchain ecosystem and plans to be a core contributor to the Optimism Foundation. It also notes that "Optimism has committed to supporting ApeChain with up to 20 million OP tokens through milestone-based token grants."
At the same time, the proposal also mentioned that the costs associated with the deployment, management, and operation of ApeChain can be handled by launching ApeChain (AC) tokens or requesting ApeCoin donations in other ways. If the DAO chooses to launch ApeChain tokens, the ApeChain team will be responsible for raising funds to support all operations, and the AC tokens will be distributed as governance tokens to ApeCoin stakers.

Currently, ApeChain is being fought over by Arbitrum and Optimism, even before its birth, which to some extent reflects the attention both sides are paying to the potential of ApeChain. As for which chain technology ApeChain will choose to support in the future, BlockBeats will continue to keep an eye on it.
