Is LayerZero's airdrop real? What is the 'SSL certificate' that the community is discussing?

Read this article in 9 Minutes
Prior to the Arbitrum airdrop, there was an identical operation.

Rumors about the upcoming airdrop of "LayerZero" are spreading like wildfire on various social media platforms and within communities.

The reason why there are so many speculations at this time is because there have been some potential signs recently, all of which seem to point to LayerZero about to "do something big".

For example, in the prediction market Polymarket, the "yes" option has surpassed the "no" option regarding the upcoming airdrop of LayerZero. Another example is that the upper-layer application Tapioca, built on LayerZero, announced a major update on December 12th, which is dependent on ZRO for decentralized verification. Additionally, Luca Netz, the CEO of Pudgy Penguins, which has a close relationship with the LayerZero team, directly exclaimed on X that "can't wait for ZRO anymore".

However, overall, the most obvious and popular sign is that the "layerzero.foundation" domain name, which has not yet been put into use, added an SSL certificate on November 3. Given that the update frequency of the "layerzero.foundation" domain name is highly consistent with that of the "layerzero.network" domain name, which has been confirmed to belong to the LayerZero project, the community speculates that this domain name is also managed by the LayerZero project.

"layerzero.foundation" domain added SSL certificate

"layerzero.foundation" and "layerzero.network" domain names were updated simultaneously in March this year.

"layerzero.foundation" domain and "layerzero.network" domain were updated simultaneously in October this year.

Looking back at the historical actions of the LayerZero project, it often performs such operations on related domain names before carrying out major actions, such as:

Announced on September 7th, 2022, the protocol browser LayerZero Scan was launched. On September 5th, an SSL certificate was added to the domain "layerzeroscan.com".

On October 19, 2022, Aptos announced the launch of its cross-chain bridge. On October 17, SSL certificates were added to the domain "theaptosbridge.com".

Announced on November 17, 2022, the Bitcoin cross-chain bridge was launched. On November 16, an SSL certificate was added to the "bitcoinbridge.network" domain name.

On February 21, 2023, the cross-chain bridge for the Goerli testnet was officially announced. On February 20, an SSL certificate was added to the "testnetbridge.com" domain name.

Therefore, it can be inferred that LayerZero will most likely take some actions related to the "layerzero.foundation" domain name in the near future.

But what actions are generally associated with the ".foundation" domain name suffix? Considering that airdrops for multiple projects such as Aptos, Arbitrum, and Sei are all completed through foundation websites, and that Arbitrum added an SSL certificate to the "arbitrum.foundation" domain name two days before announcing the airdrop in March of this year, it's hard not to let community users' imaginations run wild.

So, what exactly is an SSL certificate? And what does this certificate have to do with potential airdrops (assuming they exist)?

Specifically, SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is a network communication encryption protocol. The entire transmission process of the traditional HTTP protocol is transmitted in plaintext, making it easy to cause data hijacking and tampering. However, the SSL protocol can encrypt the transmission process, effectively preventing data from being monitored and tampered with.

To put it simply, adding an SSL certificate ensures that the website is more secure.

Therefore, it can be inferred that updating the SSL certificate for the "layerzero.foundation" domain name may indicate that LayerZero hopes to improve the security of the website through some measures.

To put it more plainly, if LayerZero really plans to conduct a ZRO airdrop through the "layerzero.foundation" domain name, the team will naturally anticipate a surge in website traffic and interaction under the high emotions of the community. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the website security status to ensure user safety.

However, all of this is still just a hypothetical situation. It should be noted that simply having an SSL certificate does not necessarily prove that LayerZero will definitely airdrop. Objectively speaking, this is only one measure taken by the domain owner to improve the quality of their basic settings.

It's a matter of personal interpretation on how to read and understand it.
