Large financial institutions such as BlackRock and Fidelity are increasing their efforts to expand their coverage of cryptocurrency products and attract more consumers. This means they need to hire more employees with cryptocurrency experience to achieve this goal.
Yoann Turpin, co-founder of digital asset trading firm Wintermute, said that they have seen employees leave to join banks and hedge funds, among other non-crypto companies. "We have seen truly exceptional talent flow back into TradFi," Turpin said, using the abbreviation for "Traditional Finance".
He said that this is one of the "unforeseeable impacts" brought by large institutions entering the encryption field.
"The number of applications for spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has surged, indicating that the industry has gained 'more third-party validation'," said Turpin at the CCDataCCDAS conference held in London last week.
This is both good and bad," he said when talking about job changes. "The downside is that we have lost some talent here and there, but the upside is that we now have supporters in traditional finance who are familiar with our company culture and can help familiarize cryptocurrency within the bank.
During the pandemic, the soaring prices of cryptocurrencies have attracted many bankers to join the industry in droves. Despite the cryptocurrency crash last year, many people still remain in their positions. However, this trend may be changing.
Recently, some people who resigned include Danielle Johnson, a managing director who had worked for Goldman Sachs for many years. She left Galaxy Digital last summer after working there for a year. Shortly after Johnson's departure, Tim Grant, Galaxy's European head, also left the company during a restructuring. Since then, Grant has established a family office called Deus X Capital, which will invest in institutional capital markets, fintech, and digital assets.
In January of this year, Galaxy also lost its global co-head of electronic cryptocurrency trading, Chris Berner. Berner previously served as head of electronic foreign exchange trading at Bank of America. After leaving Galaxy, he joined Wealthfront as global co-head of electronic foreign exchange trading.
Talents from bankrupt cryptocurrency companies have found new homes in traditional finance. Rachel Willis, former communications manager at BlockFi, joined BNY Mellon's digital asset team as chief of staff in April.
Earlier this year, Mellon Bank in New York appointed former Zodia Custody CEO Maxime de Guillebon as its head of digital asset products. De Guillebon was succeeded by former Bitstamp CEO Julian Sawyer, who has accumulated extensive experience at companies such as Accenture and Starling Bank. Other individuals have also switched jobs in 2022, such as Gemini's communications director Carolyn Vadino, who joined BlackRock last summer.
These measures were taken amidst the influx of institutions into the cryptocurrency industry.
Last month, a report from the Greenwich Associates found that bosses of banks, hedge funds, asset management companies, and other financial firms are increasingly hiring experienced professionals for their cryptocurrency departments. 24% of companies reported having senior positions specifically dedicated to digital assets.
Major institutional measures are helping the overall sentiment of the cryptocurrency industry. Market analysts believe that cryptocurrencies have become a new battlefield for young, tech-savvy investors. Marketing and branding are key. Turpin, who has held trading positions at financial firms including market maker Optiver, responded to this idea. He believes that the push for ETFs may have a smaller impact on bringing in new funds to the industry, and that branding and understanding of new fund inflows may be a more effective battle.
The improvement of emotions not only benefits investors. "Everyone needs a little comfort, especially when you come from traditional finance and truly enter the cryptocurrency field," Turpin said.
