ETH hits new highs, how advanced are the operational methods behind it?

Read this article in 9 Minutes
The spring of Ethscription has arrived, what is the reason behind it? Who are the driving forces behind it?

Amidst the silence in the ordinals ecosystem, Ethscriptions, which imitates BRC-20 Token, suddenly surged after being stagnant for 3-4 months in the range of 270-300, and nearly doubled to 800U last night.

This has surprised many people, after all, when Ethscription was first released, there was no index, no trading market, and it didn't even have pre-prepared technical documentation like BRC-20.

Pushers are bullish on ETHS and are entering the market in a big way

Ethscriptions allows non-financial and arbitrary data to be written to the Ethereum blockchain, as long as the file size does not exceed 96 kilobytes. Users can engrave any type of file. According to its creator, although it currently only allows images, this will change in the future.

These engravings use the so-called Ethereum "call data", which refers to the data provided in the call to a smart contract. Lehman said it is cheaper and more decentralized than using contract storage. The protocol "guarantees the uniqueness of all valid Ethscriptions content," the creator wrote on Twitter.

BlockBeats has previously written about ETHscriptions, and you can read more about it in the article "Ordinals Trigger "NFT Retrogression", Not an Idealistic Return".

In a tweet published 2 years ago, @dhof classified ETH "on-chain NFTs" into different levels based on their implementation methods. Level one stores data in the calldata field of ETH transactions, level two stores data using the EVM opcode sstore and renders it using external scripts, and the highest level three stores data using the EVM opcode sstore and renders it using built-in renderers in smart contracts to output SVG images or similar data URIs.

If we rate Ethscription according to this standard, it can only receive a one-star rating. As mentioned at the beginning of its official website, Ethscription achieves data storage by storing data in the calldata field of ETH transactions. The rendering of images is done through off-chain indexing, and by open-sourcing the index, off-chain operations are also decentralized.

And why is Ethscription's spring coming this time? What are the reasons behind it? Who are the driving forces? And what are the advanced operational methods?

"Bro, you understand traffic passwords"

During the rise of Ethscription, KOLs also found many traffic passwords, playing a role in promoting it. The content of the post includes "#ETHS". All that is needed is some time for "silent blooming" and waiting for the ETHS army to arrive, in order to obtain many one-click likes, comments, and shares.

In the Telegram of Ethscription, community members are also on standby at all times, charging forward to increase traffic for relevant tweets. The higher the traffic, the more KOLs will speak and the higher the price will be. With their guidance, many small fish and shrimps also follow suit, flooding relevant content and forming a powerful traffic code.

「我们主打一个 L2 新叙事」

translates to

"We are promoting a new L2 narrative."

In addition, another operational method of the Ethscription army is to compare ETHS with L2, and this new narrative has gained strong dissemination within the community.

"eths is another approach to Ethereum Layer 2. Layer 2 is a separate chain that can be closed off, while eths trades on the Ethereum mainnet. Gas fees are as cheap as Layer 2, and swap, defi, and gamefi on the mainnet can all be implemented on eths. Most importantly, it runs on the mainnet and cannot be closed off, making it more secure and decentralized than Layer 2. Currently, various Layer 2s have market values of tens of billions, while eths only has a few million." This paragraph has become a set of copy and paste language.

And the source of this new L2 narrative seems to be the development proposals ESIP-5 and ESIP-6 that will soon be launched by Ethscription.

ESIP-5 proposal refers to Bulk Ethscription Transfers from EOAs. Currently, only single inscriptions can be transferred in a transaction for non-contract addresses. With the launch of ESIP-5, multiple inscriptions can be transferred in a single transaction. According to a tweet by @0xHirsch, up to 4,000 inscriptions can be transferred in a single transaction, costing only 0.11 ETH at current gas fees. ESIP-6 proposal refers to Opt-in Ethscription Non-uniqueness. Currently, only the first inscription with the same content (characters) is considered valid. This indexing rule ensures the uniqueness and uniqueness of inscriptions, but there are limitations and issues for use cases that require the exchange and verification of duplicate information between smart contracts and Dumb Contracts, such as the operation of Ethscriptions virtual machines.

Therefore, as the ESIP-5 and ESIP-6 development proposals are about to be implemented, members of the Ethscription community believe that "compared to other L2 solutions such as ZK and ARB, ETHS can achieve gas fees cheaper than L2 without the need for network switching. After upgrading to ESIP-5 today, the gas fee for each transaction has been reduced to around 0.05u, which is even cheaper than many L2 solutions."

Against the backdrop of the current encryption environment, the narrative, rhetoric, and operational methods of projects have become increasingly fancy. With the help of clever community operations, Ethscription has gained a lot of traffic and attention. Regardless of the development of the project itself, the operational methods behind ETHS have proven how sophisticated the dissemination and operation in the encryption asset circle can be. However, whether its technical strength can support today's high valuations remains to be tested by time.
