Dune CEO internal memo: Although we have been troubled by the wool party, the joke about "airdropping garbage" is a bit too much.

The more one denies the possibility of an airdrop, the more serious the problem becomes.

As a practitioner in the encryption industry, I can translate the following Chinese text to English without considering the context or industry-specific terms and names. English words and phrases, as well as capitalized English words and phrases, should not be translated or omitted, for example: ZKS, STARK, SCROLL -> ZKS, STARK, SCROLL. If there are English characters in the a link, they should be returned directly without translation. When there are only punctuation marks in the content, the punctuation marks should be returned as they are. HTML tags in the content, such as

Due to the launch of the encryption intelligence analysis platform Arkham on Binance IEO, the topic of whether Nansen and DUNE and other encryption tools will issue coins in the future has attracted much attention from the community. On July 14, 2023, the official Twitter account of Dune released an NFT series called "Dune Airdump" to mock the behavior of distributing airdrops. This move has sparked heated discussions in the community and has been criticized by many.

Dune Analytics (now Dune) founder and CEO Fredrik Haga has issued a personal letter of apology and explanation to the team. The following is the full text of the internal letter compiled by BlockBeats.

Last Friday, my joke about "airdropping garbage" caused a lot of reactions, ranging from "this is so funny" to "this is really immature and inappropriate". Some members of the team directly expressed the latter view to me. First of all, I want to commend the courage of those who can give honest feedback to the CEO. This is not easy, but it will make me and us better. Considering how difficult it is to give such feedback, I believe some of you may have similar emotions but have not yet shared them. I don't feel good about this, so I want to share some reflections.

We have been fighting against wool party for several months. They have disrupted our internal statistical data, abused our system, and made it difficult for us to operate our business and provide better services to our users and customers.

One thing I am most proud of at Dune is our truly curious and contributing community of creators who help drive the field forward. In stark contrast to the noise and short-termism present elsewhere in the industry, Dune's Wizards (the title given to active and high-quality content-producing community users on Dune) roll up their sleeves and try to do something truly useful. Therefore, it is very disappointing to see our Discord and products polluted by farmers in both spirit and reality.

I'm trying to make the wool party understand that they are doing something stupid. But this only leads to the Streisand effect (i.e. the more you try to hide something, the more attention it gets). The more I say that there won't be an airdrop, the more serious the problem becomes. The online messages were very strong, so on Thursday night, I thought, let's turn the tables on them, and came up with the idea of "airdropping garbage". The next day, without asking anyone on the team for their opinion, I went ahead and did it. Although it was mainly a small joke to tease the wool party, it to some extent triggered a viral spread and attracted a lot of attention...

This will stop the farmers?... Hopefully so!

Will I do it again? Although I think our brand's willingness to joke and be low-key is an advantage, we went a bit too far this time. Looking back, I think this may have a negative impact on us as a team, company, and community. I didn't show the highest level of integrity here, nor did I work hard as a team. This conflicts somewhat with our goal of becoming the best cryptocurrency company. I hope that before deciding to execute this idea, I can consider it more and seek your opinions more. If so, this would not have happened. So, I won't do it again.

Should we continue to use memes and jokes in our communication? I think we should, but it can also be taken too far (like in this case) - it's an art of balance, and we must work together as a team to find that right balance point.

Regardless of whether you enjoyed last week's joke, I hope you enjoy this email.

Looking forward to this week's (censored) announcement, Ifg!

Fredrik
