Optimistic relays are the future because they not only It can increase the income of block producers, and it is cheaper and easier to maintain.

Relays are an important part of the MEV-Boost architecture, they act as trusted auction houses between block builders and block producers. In order to achieve this trust, the mechanism will increase the delay and cost of the relay, reduce the fee of the block producer, and increase the dependence of the protocol on the relay.

This article discusses three ways to gradually improve the relay design , and prove that these methods can bring the following effects:

· More revenue-generating block space

· Reduce data hosting incentives

·Reduce relay cost

· Reduce dependence on relay

The relay adds two types of delays:

· Block transmission delay: in Latency introduced when downloading chunk content, on the order of 10-100 milliseconds, depending on location.

·Block simulation delay: the delay introduced when simulating the content of the block, about 140 milliseconds.

Due to the high cost of simulation and no clear source of revenue, the Chinese Follower is also able to review transactions. Relays have also become more important in propagating blocks since the sandwich attack on April 3, 2023.

Optimistic Relay v1 skips simulation, 150 ms faster and lower cost.

In 1% of the cases, the bid was increased by about 1000 gwei/mus, which means that the Optimistic Relay v1 can save block creators 0.015 ETH.

Ultrasonic relay and bloxRoute already provide skip simulation options. Ultrasonic relays observed a 17% improvement in block transfers after switching to Optimistic v1 relays.

Optimistic v2 will again reduce latency by 10-100ms , and reduce the incentives for data hosting; while Optimistic v2.5 will reduce the reliance on relays as block disseminators.

Optimistic relay performance improvements will make it a future trend.

Frontier Research has deployed an Optimistic relay to demonstrate this improvement and support ecosystem diversity.
