Is 2023 the year of ZK?
Cheap, fast, and secure, Zk-Rollups are an important part of Ethereum's expansion plan, and we want to see which ZK projects will shine in 2023.
So far, we've seen:
Scroll - Enable smart contract;
Polygon Hermez - Deploys its public test network;
Zksync - Targets EVM-compatible L3 in 1Q 2023;
StarkWare's StarkNet - Uniswap V3 has been deployed.

When it comes to comparing zkEVM solutions, it's important to note that ZK technology has been around for a while, but only recently has it been considered the future.
In 2021, Hermez was acquired by Polygon and renamed Polygon Hermez (now Polygon ZK).
As a result, the Polygon tokens $MATIC and $HEZ were integrated and freely exchanged on the Hermez website.
As Hermez is now part of the growing Polygon ecosystem, exciting developments on the Hermez network may be revealed in the future.
On 9 January 2023, the Scroll team conducted a scheduled Pre-Alpha reset to introduce some new and exciting performance optimizations that will help drive high throughput in the Pre-Alpha test network.
The test network received a significant amount of traffic in its first week, recording more than 270,000 unique addresses.
zksync is a Layer 2 extension solution that offers cheaper and faster transactions than the main Ethereum blockchain (Layer 1).
It uses ZK-Rollup technology to process transactions outside the Ethereum blockchain while maintaining its security and finality. The benefits of zkSync include low Gas rates, high speed, and a high level of security.
It should be noted that Polygon, Scroll, and zkSync have different approaches to building zkEVM (a zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine), with everyone having trade-offs in their design.
Polygon's zkEVM solution aims to significantly improve the experience of using and building Ethereum by providing scalability and lower transaction costs, which is an exciting step towards greater adoption of Web3 technology.
The system also enables dApps that exist on chains compatible with Ethereum virtual machines to easily migrate to zkEVM, where EVM equivalence and Ethereum network effects provide developers with distinct advantages.
Polygon's zkEVM development uses programming languages, such as Solidity, and toolsets that developers are already familiar with, such as Metamask, Hardhat, Truffle, and Remix. This means that developers can migrate dApps by simply switching nodes.
This also makes Polygon zkEVM ideal for seamlessly creating NFT, new gaming technologies, and enterprise applications. Existing Polygon dApps can be easily migrated to zkEVM without much technical support.
The investment and development of zero-knowledge proof is an important signal that the technology is getting ready for prime time.
The advantages of zero-knowledge proof include:
Contributing to the scalability of the Ethereum network,
With higher security and privacy than traditional rollups,
The ability to create complex smart contracts and dApps, which is not possible on Ethereum L1.
Disadvantages include:
With so many ZK-Rollup projects springing up, it can be difficult to separate good projects from those that may make false promises.
While Rollup technology provides new benefits, it also introduces some new difficulties in controlling data accessibility in a decentralized and censor-resistant manner. On the road to widespread adoption, decentralization and security must come first.
All in all, the future looks bright for the ZK solution and its potential to revolutionize the blockchain space in 2023. With various projects and teams working on the development of zkEVM, we can expect to see continued progress and advancement of this technology in the coming year. As a member of the blockchain community, this is an exciting time as we witness the development of this technology and its potential impact on various industries.
