How to find a job in Web3?

Read this article in 30 Minutes
Why work in Web3? Because it will affect almost every industry in the next two decades.
Original title: How to find a job in Web3? "
Original author: Mason Nystrom
Original compilation: Block unicorn

In the past, I have given advice to both strangers and friends looking to secure full-time employment in the crypto space, and I have written about this at length before. But it's been a few years, and I'd like to offer some new advice that works, and update my advice with recent examples (what worked two years ago may not work today).

If you are just starting out or in your early career, why should you cryptocurrencies)? First, because it will impact nearly every industry in the next two decades. Second, Web3 provides young people with the ability to become experts in this growing field without having to climb the decades-long ladder of the latter (consulting/banking/tech) to get to the level you need for a company or a specific field of work make a meaningful contribution.

Finally, the smartest people in the world are getting into Web3 - Quit FANG (Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google) companies — and join crypto companies or DAOs. The better you are, the more you learn, and you should optimize for this effect early in your career.

Some Advice< /h3>

There are only two types of advice: the advice someone passes on because it worked for them, or the humble and always-on advice learned from regret. Both are valuable, but you should only copy the former.

My advice stems from what works for me and what I don't, although applicable For many people, but my advice is for people with little work experience, college students, or people with a few years of work experience who want to change careers.

Think of this suggestion as a menu, pick a few options that sound like something to your liking and commit to them. Consistency is important.

Become an Intern

h3>

Internships are the fastest way to find out if you like a field or not. I highly recommend it if you are a student at any level and have the opportunity to be an intern. This is probably the best option for students looking to learn about crypto networks and gain some experience. Interning at a local cryptocurrency exchange in Hong Kong during my MBA was a great initial experience to get my feet wet and immersed in the crypto space.

Join DAO

Contributors can join multiple DAOs - Social DAO, Protocol DAO, NFT Gated DAO/Community, Investment DAO, etc.

Social DAOs - DAOs that form communities primarily in terms of exclusivity, events or community activities - Be the first to join the DAO to get connected and learn how the DAO works. These DAOs include location-specific communities like the ATX DAO, NFT closed communities, and DAOs like Friends with Benefits.

Or, if you have knowledge or a particular passion for a particular product or protocol, joining this DAO may A great way to gain initial experience and build a reputation. Many DAOs including Sushi, Rarible, Index Coop, Yearn, etc. include various working groups for various individuals. Demonstrating that you can provide value in a DAO is a great way to 1) Gain experience and prove that you can add value to a product/protocol and possibly be rewarded by the DAO for your contribution.

A word to the DAOists, you probably can't do it in more than 2-3 DAOs effective contribution (unless the DAO is very small). Optimize for high-quality contributions over low-quantity contributions. DAOs want to work with people who stick around, not people who jumped to the hottest DAO.

Be an Early Adopter< /h3>

Being an early adopter is easy in hindsight, however, at the moment it takes risk. These risks include aspects of time, money and attention, and the opportunity cost of trial and error. Keeping cryptocurrencies up to date with new applications or protocols is expensive and often comes with the potential risk of disruption. Sometimes it needs to be plugged in so that when a project like Loot or YFI drops, you can mint or farm it right away. Other times, it takes money to farm or trade protocols that may never promise airdrops or distributions to users. Or how many bitcoin maximalists avoided Ethereum early on when you were already invested in other competitors like Ethereum because they didn't want to see the potential.

Fortunately, DAOs like Rabbithole are helping to educate the next generation of crypto users, either inspiring They use agreements, which either offer the ability to perform tasks in exchange for XP. Rabbithold has successfully increased the adoption rate of protocols like Polygon and made it possible for all successful ENS mission completers to receive an ENS airdrop. While not all airdrops have been lucrative, several airdrops have generated substantial returns.

More importantly than airdrops, early adopters often make the best candidates for early hires, Because they become the most engaged members of the discord or community. Additionally, founders want to hire people who believe in their mission. Early adopters who already contribute to the project in their free time are much better off than mercenary employees looking for top pay. As evidence, nearly every early research analyst at Messari came from its Community Analyst Program, which calls for individuals eager to work for free and passionate about cryptocurrencies.

Messari Hub pays analysts these days but still requires focus and obsession with cryptocurrencies Therefore, most of the employees of the Messari intelligence team come from the Messari Hub.

Join the Messari Center

Joining Messari Hub can be a great way to gain some experience, build your resume, get paid and make connections in the crypto world. I participated in the original Messari Analyst Program by writing cryptoasset profiles. Ryan Selkis' original call to analysts was exactly what I was looking for, a place to start and a place to engage and learn as much as possible. I learned about ERC20 tokens, layer 2 state channels, etc. by writing cryptoasset profiles and indirectly through osmosis. When you have great people around you - such as mentors or other Messari Hub analysts - their knowledge and experience flows from them to others.

Personally, Messari helped me a lot early in my career, not only In experience, but also in status. In the "real" business world, when you have the Ivy League or McKinsey or Goldman Sachs or [insert your favorite big name firm] on your resume, people listen. In the crypto space, people don't care much about your education (Messari doesn't care at all) status or TradFi experience, but names like Coinbase, Messari, OpenSea, Uniswap, Compound, Chainalysis all show that you are above the noise. It may be unfortunate, but humans have a desire to assign status.

More interestingly, I see many Messari Hub analysts going into crypto full-time because When acquiring a more significant platform (the Messari platform), they used it as leverage to get noticed by the right people.

Writing

Nic Carter, Chris Burniske, Ryan Selkis, Derek Hsue, Phil Bonello, Ryan Watkins and Kyle Samani have all become names in the crypto space as they start writing about blockchain topics of blogs, mainly related to investment or research. One of the highest skills you can utilize is your ability to write. Not only is it hard to write good content, but it's also hard to have the guts to put your opinion there. Having said that, anyone can be a writer - never tell yourself that. I also never thought of myself as a writer. After hundreds of thousands of words, here I am, and I still have typos in my writing.

Some simple articles or writing forms:
< /p>

If you are not comfortable sharing your thoughts, get over it! If you really want to relax, start by summarizing the great, long or complex sections. You'd be surprised how little time people spend reading. Curated content is important and valuable.

Domain Expertise: Examine concepts in specific domains, liquidity mining, NFT, smart Contracts, stablecoins, digital art. , DeFi aggregation, metaverse ecosystem, etc.

Teaching. You did something, now show others how to do it! DeFi Dad turned his passion for onboarding DeFi users into a job at a top DeFi wallet (Zapper) and then venture capital (Fourth Revolution Capital). Not interested in DeFi, give demos on NFTs, new blockchains or niche applications.

Speed and Timely Information:  Darren Lau's newsletter, the Daily Ape, provides important and Timely event listings.

Twitter

If prose isn't your thing, show your talent on Twitter  Smart people use Twitter to build their brands like Pomp, Ryan Sean Adams, Meltem Dimirros, Arianna Simpson Nic Carter, Ari David Paul, Hasu, Tom Shaughnessy, Jason Choi, Ryan Watkins and more, just don't be trolls or scammers.

Twitter Tip:

< p>

- Create a weekly Twitter space for your favorite topics.

- Aggregate  great topics for a given topic or summarize long ones.

- Synthesizing an eventful or highly listened to podcast.

- Images do well - creating them takes time but helps go viral.

- tagging relevant individuals or companies in threads helps with distribution, but don't tag when they're clearly irrelevant in threads or images People - This is a quick fix. Don't tag the damn Elon or SBF, it's a long shot (they don't give a shit about you). Instead, tag people in the 10k-100k follower range who are more likely to retweet or like your posts.

- Shitposting and memes: CMS intern creates a brand with fun creative videos and memes. Other intern accounts have tried to replicate this with some success, but not with the same effort.

- Persist - You need to tweet at least once a week, like playing a game.

- Be creative, or at least find your own ideas on existing ones.

You will start with zero followers, 1k is the hardest, 10K is still a Tribulations, it gets easier from there. The last rule of Twitter - be real, people want to follow real people, not bots.

Use other social media platforms

While Twitter has the strongest crypto community, you can use Instagram, Reddit, Periscope, TikTok or other social media networks to find your favorite media. Most people can only find success on a handful of mediums like Twitter and Linkedin or Instagram and TikTok, so use the one that feels most authentic. I also highly recommend adopting new social media platforms or features like TikTok or Twitter Spaces. If you're on a channel and say to yourself "wow this content is crap, I can do better" then you're probably right and someone can get more viewers for good content (looking at your TikTok) . In general, the point is to try new forms of media and then stick with what works best.

Start a YouTube channel or podcast

Maybe you are not a master of words, but you are good at making videos, especially live content. Start your own Youtube channel or make some tutorial videos, YouTube is the second largest search engine - take advantage of it.

The podcast sets the stage for crypto discussions, Jill Carlson and the Meltem Demirors have a great podcast. Tony Sheng tried an interesting podcast (still waiting for the next season). What Peter McCormack's Bitcoin does. Nathaniel Whittemore started Long Read Sunday, which curates content and now hosts a successful podcast/livestream.

Unsolicited podcast advice from someone who has never hosted a podcast before:

- For God's sake don't just think of a podcast as interviewing person X, that's an outdated format.

- Consider live podcasting for added authenticity and timeliness.

- Make your podcast a story (Crazy Genius), an education (Gimlet) or something different.

- See Robinhood  Snack's podcast for a small daily newsletter, or Naval from Spearhead or How to Get Rich and Nivi podcasts.

- There is room for small podcast episodes of 3 to 15 minutes. Just because Joe Rogan perfected a 3-hour podcast doesn't mean every podcast needs to be at least an hour long.

The Meatspace: Join the Party , Events and Clubs

If your area is filled with blockchain events, I recommend attending meetups or community events, most of which are free. Some common places to find events include Meetup and Eventbrite. For college students, check out your school's blockchain club or start your own! If you're looking for a job, I don't recommend attending conferences because unless you're really good at networking, conference tickets won't provide a good ROI (let's face it, if you are, you're probably going to get hired ). Early NFT communities started holding meetups, and social DAOs like Bankless and Friends With Benefits.

Move to Crypto City

In essence, we are all products of our environment. We all know that if you want to succeed in tech, you should probably live where innovation is happening. I'm not saying you need to move to a major tech city like New York or San Francisco, but if you live there, you should take advantage of it. Other emerging tech cities in the US include Los Angeles, Denver, Austin and Seattle. If you're willing to venture abroad, you have more options. Berlin, Shanghai or Singapore are all good places to give yourself an edge.

If you are in China, you will move to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Guangzhou , these 5 cities gather the most scientific and technological talents and the fastest circulation of encrypted information, allowing you to learn about the latest technological things faster.

I would warn about this, say where you live varies It's not that important anymore. Most crypto companies are remote-first, but if you're young, I still recommend meeting people in person to cement those connections. It's much easier to connect with colleagues on a Tuesday afternoon at the office or over drinks than on Zoom. It's still quite possible to have a good connection in a remote-first environment, but it takes more effort.

Use your strengths ( wizard ability)

People with some work experience should use it. If you have any skills including:

- Analyst (Excel Wizard)

- CPA (Accounting Wizard)

- CFA ("I do not give investment advice" Wizard)

- Lawyer (Never tire of Case Law Wizard)

- Fearless Public Speaker (Voice or Podcast Wizard)

- Write Like Dickens (Keyboard Wizard)

- People Wizard (Companies literally for the web paid, it's just called business development)

- Process (detail oriented wizard)

- Design (Photoshop and Graphic Design Wizard)

- Knowledge of economics (cryptocurrency is based on incentives and game theory)

If you have Any of these skills, then you have an advantage over many others currently in the crypto space. For the students and young people out there, use your time to learn new skills or gain experience.

Available to help< /h3>

This doesn't mean telling someone "please let me know how I can help" as if you were a VC or impersonating a VC account. The crypto world is small compared to any other industry. You can connect with people on Twitter and, to a lesser extent, via email. Do not contact the manager of a VC firm or the CEO of your favorite crypto company. They will most likely not respond. Find someone newer to the company as they may have more time and will approach you as a young professional. There's a lot written about how to reach people, so I won't say much, except that you should find a way to provide value.

Some examples:

- People are always looking for something to help them find the information they need.

- Curation of content, news, information, data, people, educational materials, etc.

- Start a local network in your community.

- Think outside the box - people are not always able to tell you what they want/need. What can your unique skills and attributes offer?

Find an encryption partner< /h3>

ETH has friends, and so should you. Find a friend who is as passionate as you and work together on any of the above topics. Nobody gets to the top alone, and if you did, you'd be alone anyway. Ryan Sean Adams and David Hoffman are an oily machine. Hasu — arguably one of the best researchers in crypto — often writes with others.

How to find a job

h3>

There are two ways to find a job:

1. The simple way.

2. The hard way.

The Simple Way

Be a human and fuck the network. Granted, networking is the best way to find a job, and making the effort to reach out, socialize or connect online will help you more than you know. At the end of the day, people want to work with their friends.

The Difficult Way

The best advice I can offer is this: You need to stand out and target your audience, the quality of your application is more important than the number of applications you send.

Sending the same cover letter or application to 100 jobs might get you a job , but if there are only a handful of companies you really want to work for, then you need to work hard to get that job.

My last piece of advice for making apps - the bad guys are different, so get another way of thinking. Here are just some ideas:

- Create a graph, chart or video to visually express something .

- Think of a cool project or find an existing one and do something slightly different (#defi index, DeepDAO, etc.

- Stay ahead of growing trends like social tokens.

- Make a website or newsletter with valuable information, such as information about new nft drops, or a list of meeting times for each open source crypto project. Find a way to save time or effort - this is Value added.

- Research a super niche topic related to blockchain and write/tweet about your findings. It doesn't Should be superficial, but it doesn't have to be totally revolutionary, just tweet/write/say your version and opinion.

- Write explainer threads about great encryption products and protocols.

Employers value those who rely on themselves Someone who does things and makes cool stuff. If you're a student or only a year or two out of school, consider yourself lucky. Chances are you have fewer commitments and lots of time - or you can be more effective Use your time wisely - build your brand and follow the advice above.

A Note About Your Resume

Again, make your resume specific. If you have absolutely no idea how to make a resume or want to start from scratch Harvard offers a lot of free material to get started. Also,   get creative with your resume - make a concept page - or at least add some nice looking templates. Remember, you're dealing with humans - lizard brains – They are naturally drawn to bright colours, graphics and pictures.

It is important to , use data and metrics whenever possible, even if it's just showing your monthly social media growth, top blog posts, newsletter subscribers, or something else impressive.

Plus, no one is going to read your entire resume. They want highlights, relevant experience, and pointers to your important channels (i.e. Github, Twitter, TikTok, etc. ) link.

These are some great resources for finding a job:

AngelList   – One of the best places to find a job at a crypto startup, without a doubt.

Crypto Jobs   – There is also a visually friendly list to find jobs.

CryptoJobsList   - A great job site.

Cryptocurrency jobs   - another one.

Pomp Crypto Jobs   – Join the Pomp Portfolio Company.

Proof of Talent  - For more advanced/technical roles.

Linkedin   – Finding crypto and blockchain jobs on LinkedIn is becoming more common.

< /p>

Web3 jobs – Web3 is hot right now.

Newsletters – Follow the newsletters of your favorite companies as they frequently announce new positions or opportunities.

Most VCs post job openings for their portfolio companies: like Pantera, ConsenSys Labs, Pardigm, etc.

Final suggestion

Overcome social or inferiority fears, sometimes you don’t feel like you’re qualified to apply, you’re afraid to tweet or express your thoughts publicly. Do it anyway, you will make mistakes, but it doesn't matter, you don't care about these things, your thoughts can change them, and apply bravely for the job you want.

Final Thoughts

h4>

Work hard, stay humble and live happily. Finally, I want to thank Messari for giving me the opportunity to work in a field I love, surrounded by incredible people. Also, thanks to Crypto Twitter, most of you are awesome.
