Jump Trading, a Chicago-based high-frequency Trading firm, just announced the closing of its seventh investment fund, JCDP-7, which raised $350 million, a record for the firm. At the same time, Jump Trading also announced the formation of its Crypto investment arm Jump Crypto, which plans to invest 40% of its seventh investment fund in cryptocurrencies, mainly in DeFi, Web 3.0, blockchain and financial applications.
What exactly does Jump Cypto do as the crypto-investing arm of secretive high-frequency Trading giant Jump Trading? What's the direction? Jump Crypto director Kanav Kariya wrote a personal explanation.
We are very excited to launch Jump Crypto, a project that Jump Trading Group has been building for six years. Public blockchains open up new and incredible modes of resource coordination by building trust between parties that don't trust each other. The public chain makes the community a true stakeholder. While we at Jump often brand ourselves as quiet builders, in this new world driven by community, we have recognized the necessity and value of building openly and the need to be a strong voice in the public discourse.
We want to tell you what we're doing, where we're going, and how we got here.

Jump Trading Group is a Trading house that started out in the CME Trading pool and grew into a research-oriented quantitative Trading firm with more than 1,000 employees worldwide and one of the largest Trading volumes in traditional asset classes.
Markets have evolved rapidly over the years, from open floor bidding to today's popular machine learning-driven high-frequency trading environments. Through these changes in the market structure, Jump has driven the evolution of its core, naturally finding its niche in each new iteration of the market structure.
In an era of electronic markets, it is not enough to just "do software". It is also necessary to build an engineering organization of the highest standard in order to stand out from the competition and stay agile.
All of a sudden, we became a software company.
As markets become smarter and breakthroughs in data engineering capabilities bring about a whole new competitive environment for predictive modeling, it is not enough to have a "quant trading department", but also to build an identity and environment where "quant minded" people can feel at home and thrive, and need to be empowered at the helm.
Suddenly, Jump became a research institution.
Jump's story is an anti-vulnerability story; An institution keeps getting stronger with each paradigm shift that kills off most areas of competition. Each new iteration leads to a recombination of skills, and in the words of Hamilton Helmer, a professor of business strategy at Stanford University and author of The Seven Foundations of Business Strategy, "process capability" grows as the muscle of organizations. This process refers to the ability to evolve in a continuous and organic manner in response to changing markets and technologies.
Jump is undergoing a new evolution with the rise of open protocols and a new wave of financial infrastructure. DeFi's rise paved the way for Jump to bring two decades of trading expertise and engineering into the crypto space, enticing us to explore the magical Internet currency rabbit hole.
Without further ado, Jump Crypto is on the scene.
Our exploration of encryption grew out of an internship at the University of Illinois Jump Research Laboratory. The work has changed dramatically over the past six years, but we remain largely faithful to the spirit of agility, open-mindedness, and rapid iteration in a laboratory environment.
In short, the first pillar of our crypto business is to become a mature, active player in the crypto market. Due to the nascent nature and unique global nature of cryptography, the crypto market structure is full of nuances and idiosyncrasies at every level of the stack. Complex trading systems tend to magnify these nuances, and scale magnifies them further, which is becoming increasingly relevant to the Jump trading concept.
The main focus of our early work was to build a strong platform that would enable users to engage in these particular markets in a large and elegant way. Combined with serious transaction intelligence, this market will enable us to stay ahead of market participants as the crypto space continues to evolve.
However, the birth of our cryptography work has a dual mission, and at the heart of the second pillar is our very straightforward argument about the crypto space -- that it is likely to grow significantly in numerous and unpredictable ways over a long enough time horizon.
As one of the few global companies in finance with strong technology, capital and innovative spirit, we are often cited as a catalyst for emerging platforms and projects. These platforms and projects often lack liquidity and opportunities to incentivise early organic participation, but have very substantial long-term potential. This usually means that your involvement is treated as a partner, not just a participant, and you need to assess the upside of the asset over a longer time horizon than typical trading decisions. While this is not very natural for a trading house, we have been able to use our paper as a beacon to evaluate these opportunities. It gives us the opportunity to work with several amazing communities and align ourselves with the crypto space.
Being a partner is a very rewarding thing in itself and we take it very seriously.
As we hone specific expertise alongside some of the most exciting projects in the field, we also repeatedly ask ourselves how we could do more. The resounding answer has become our team's rallying cry: to build, build the tunnel and rail, build communities. The furious pace pushes us to learn more about the crypto ecosystem and uncover a treasure trove of systems design and engineering issues that lie between us and the Promised Land.
Here's a look at some of the things we've been doing in the future.
· We are involved in some of the most exciting and successful projects in Terra Governance Protocol-DEFI and there are a lot of cool, complex economics behind it. Terra's stabilization mechanism is a great example. It needs to address many key market parameters in a high-dimensional space to balance the safety and resilience of the platform. Our data engineering pipeline and marketing battle experience enables us to analyze these complex systems and make meaningful contributions to community discussions.

· A big part of the success of Solana Vesting Contract Grant - Open finance is that the builder is able to take full advantage of the efforts of those who build with him. While Solana's development ecosystem is still young, it is rapidly maturing, and we hope that lego pieces like Solana Vesting Contract will enable the builders to focus on the unique elements they aim to bring to the world, with financial security, The Bonfida team did a great job of this and went above and beyond providing a nice, clean user interface. This product has been approved for use by the builder in the Solana ecosystem.
· Guardian in the Wormhole Network -- Wormhole is a decentralized network that powers cross-chain communication between high-value blockchains. The security of cross-chain messaging between these chains is a big hole in the ecosystem, given that the chains cannot run each other's light clients efficiently. We are very excited about Wormhole's pragmatic and effective approach to addressing this issue and are proud to be one of the guardians of this network that has helped to secure it. More on the Wormhole project is described below.
With the development of financial markets, central price-fixing order book has emerged as a medium for coordinating the market interests of a wide range of participants for a number of reasons.
· Openness -- allowing multilateral coordination of market interests
· Transparency -- allow market participants to see the full range of interest publicly expressed in the asset
· Expressiveness -- allows fine tuning and personalized perspectives to be expressed
Serum is the order book trading platform on Solana's blockchain, where a lot of magic can be achieved by leveraging the trust mechanism of the chain. In the traditional financial world, there is a vast network of intermediaries behind the scenes that ultimately resolve the execution of order books on trading platforms to address trust issues. The fact that Serum can export this functionality to the Solana blockchain and build an order book application on it is simply amazing. Composability is usually used to describe the interaction of various applications on a chain, or the reuse of various sub-components. But what is often left out of the discussion is that the default components in every blockchain application are made up of underlying trust. This is very powerful.
This open order book network makes it accessible to users anywhere in the world, and thus aggregates interest globally, something that has never been done before. Anyone can start an order book and start pooling liquidity for any asset, and quickly. We've only scratched the surface of the innovations that blockchain tracks can enable, but you can be sure that the efficient transfer of values will be an important part of the crypto story. As an active market participant and liquidity provider on the platform, we see Serum playing an important role in this.
· Acquisition of Certus One - We recently acquired the talented Certus One team. Their presence strengthens the work of the communities in which we develop and participate, and it is a pleasure to continue to build with them. Here are some of the things they brought, with more to come.
· Proof of stake (PoS) and managed stack each level has a high degree of security. The team has made impressive progress with its Mongon operating system and the SignOS distributed key management solution they are building.
· Focus on validation of human quality and open construction. In the early stages of PoS system development, an open discussion about validators and uncensored network quality was critical. Discussions about proper, transparent tracking metrics at every level of the stack could save the industry a lot of pain in the future. Certus has been one of the loudest and strongest voices in this space, and we want to support them as a beacon of strong and secure decentralization.
· PDO verifier. They are strong supporters of the PDO network and one of the selected validators behind the ETH pledge program. PoS assets pledged play a considerable role in the future of composable DeFi, and PDO is the leader in this field.
· The Pyth Network-Predictor problem has long been one of the beluga whales of cryptography. Blockchain enables us to execute arbitrary pieces of logic on ledger state without trust. A major obstacle to applying this capability to a broad suite of applications is the inability to include off-chain (or so called real-world) information in this state without trust.
With DeFi becoming the dominant category of on-chain applications, the most sub-value chain data contained in blockchain state is real-time financial data. It's worth taking a minute here to talk about "real time."
The DeFi app uses predictor data, which is typically used to determine the effective price at which risk is transferred between participants. Typically, liquidity providers and pledgers are on the side of the risk transfer. If prices are delayed, opportunistic market participants can gain information earlier than the pledgers, thereby exploiting them. So far, classical models of predictive machines have attempted the "wisdom of crowds" approach. And in a world where a new batch of on-chain transactions are executed every 400 milliseconds, the chances of a large number of people having widespread access to current market prices and being able to reliably distribute them to blockchain P2P networks in that time interval are very limited.
1. The most active market participants and liquidity providers -- this group of participants actually trades (possibly many times) within that time frame. These traders are also likely to trade in a large number of related locations of assets, so can effectively integrate information and notice nuances in market structure.
2. Trading platforms and Other Execution venues -- Trading platforms that match trades are the origin of many price discoveries. They are the first to know what market participants are willing to trade at, so they are obviously able to publish real-time price information. They also typically have a very sophisticated data reporting infrastructure that is well placed to disseminate this information quickly and reliably to P2P networks.
One important difference between these two types of participants and third-party price publishers is that they actually facilitate or directly trade at a given price, rather than reporting prices queried from external sources. That means they have a financial stake in it, which is a critical part of cyber security. In the third-party predictor model, there is no stake in the source of the price queried and reported, and no incentive to publish accurate prices to the network. This is another big hole filled by first-party data publishers.
Jump falls squarely into the first category above (first-party data publisher). In addition to contributing data, we actively contribute to the code base and work on solving many interesting research questions in platform design.
A growing number of financial giants have also pledged to join the network as first-party data publishers. Joining the trading community are other well-known financial institutions, Examples include GTS, Virtu Financial, Chicago Trading Company, Akuna, Cumberland, XR Trading, Hudson River Trading, Susquehanna and Jane Street. In addition, several trading platforms such as BSX/MIAX, LMAX and IEX have announced their participation. Moreover, as a crypto native project, the Pyth network also receives price data from well-known crypto enterprises such as Genesis, FTX, CMS, CoinShares and Bitso. This initial list already contains a large proportion of trading volumes across many asset classes and we are pleased to see it grow so quickly.
Solana is the preferred underlying public chain for Pyth Networks because of its well-known advantages in transaction capacity and latency. However, The Pyth Network price is intended to be distributed to more blockchains over the Wormhole Network. Developers building apps on Ethereum and Terra, for example, will be able to take advantage of these prices in their application logic. Pyth Network aims to grow the pie and is very much in line with Jump's vision and mission to be a strong positive force in the space and drive it to maturity.
· Wormhole -- The crypto ecosystem has evolved to include multiple heterogeneous high value chains, and we believe that diverse computing environments will continue to evolve and retain value. There's a big "interoperability" hole, though, because until now, the chains couldn't talk to each other.
Each blockchain world generates interesting states that are uniquely facilitated by its environment. For example, Terra blockchain natively generates UST -- a decentralized staboin, Solana's computing power can generate Pyth quotes, Ethereum's strong community generates NFT and governance votes on major protocols, etc. Composability between different parts of these states has the potential to unlock huge opportunities for innovation. Wormhole takes a very simple, fast and practical approach to fully general-purpose communication across heterogeneous chains.
The Certus team built the first release of the Wormhole project in an incredibly fast and efficient manner. Now, a Wormhole Guardian community is joining forces to create a more versatile and scalable Wormhole network. The vision for this project is a perfect fit with our mission to help create strong pipelines and infrastructure, and we're happy to continue contributing to that.
In a world where finding reliable Rust engineers is less likely than winning the lottery, Jump's wealth of systems engineering talent and quantitative technology gives us a solid head start in cryptography. But Jump Crypto is still in its very early stages. We are traders, builders and members of communities that are excited about and actively pushing the industry forward. To all the smart people out there at Stay Hungry -- get in touch with us if you'd like to build a decentralized track with some of the smartest people in the field.
Time to build!
