Digital Currency Group& NBSP, May 7, 2011; (DCG) has made an undisclosed strategic investment in South Korean cryptocurrency trading platform Gopax. DCG is now the second largest shareholder in blockchain company Streami, according to an emailed statement on Thursday.
Streami is the operator of the crypto exchange Goax, which handles about $115 million in 24-hour trading, according to CoinMarketCap. DCG's acquisition suggests it is not worried about Gopax being affected by increasing scrutiny of the crypto industry in South Korea.
In April, the head of South Korea's regulator, the Financial Services Commission, said all cryptocurrency exchanges in the country could be shut down in September because they were not legally registered,
In addition, the investment will allow Streami to form a partnership with digital asset lender Genesis, a subsidiary of DCG, whose liquidity pool will be used by Gopax to offer savings products. In December, Gopax launched Gofi, a savings product with $600m in deposits.
