Optimistic Rollup scenarios have been discussed in the Eum community for some time and, as I mentioned a few days ago, this Layer-2 extension technology has been implemented. Today (October 2) Vitalik has published an article on "Ethereum roadmap with ROLLup at its core" that is well worth reading.
I highly recommend that you read through the full text, but here's a summary: Vitalik is basically arguing that we can implement an extensible network of equity proofs in Eth2's Phase 1.5 (i.e., Eth1 and Eth2 merge) without waiting for Phase 2 implementation. We can do this by leveraging the sharding chain as the data availability layer and using ROLLup as the execution environment (since we don't use sharding as the execution environment, we don't have to wait for Phase 2 implementation).
Vitalik wants us to focus on the Rollup solution instead of implementing Phase 2 because he believes that by the time Phase 2 is implemented, we will have a thriving Layer-2 ecosystem, and Optimistic Rollup will be an important part of that. By then, the network effects will be so strong that our research and development efforts on Phase 2 will be lost and we will be better off focusing on Phase 1 and Phase 1.5. It's like starting out today as an Ethereum killer -- just think how hard it is.
Personally, I like this proposal very much. I have been saying for a long time that I believe ethereal will become a global financial clearing layer and the design around ROLLup is right for that purpose. Imagine ethereum's base Layer becoming a super decentralized, super secure base Layer for all kinds of Layer-2 constructs to clear, with end users enjoying the same security while getting near-instant transaction processing speed and very low fees on Layer-2.
You might be thinking, isn't that a lot like how bitcoin expands? In a sense, it is, but the key difference is that Ethereum's Layer-1 is more expressive than Bitcoin (able to execute smart contracts), we can handle much more complex transactions, and host more advanced extensions (such as ROLLup). Beyond that, ethereum's design and economic attributes, at least in theory, will get better with eiP-1559 and proof of interest, making it the most secure clearing layer on earth -- even safer than Bitcoin.
