Ethereum core developers have submitted a proposal for "Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0" to move the consensus algorithm to PoS

Phase 0 will start as early as the end of the year.

Rhythm BlockBeats news, on September 16, Danny Ryan, the core developer of Ethereum Foundation, formally submitted a proposal to transfer ethereum blockchain from the current PoW algorithm to PoS consensus mechanism. Once approved by Ethereum's core developers, Serenity Phase 0 or the Beacon Chain marking PoS will be rolled out and is expected to be operational later this year or early next year.

It is understood that the concept of sharding will be introduced in the beacon chain to solve the scalability problem of Ethereum without affecting network security and decentralization. Phase 0 is just the first step in the multiphase development of Ethereum 2.0. Other phases of development and rollout are expected to last at least until 2021.
