Apps say: We don't store or transfer clipboard content, just reference content

BlockBeats: After TikTok, the overseas version of The app, was reported to regularly read the clipboard data of iPhone users, Reddit and LinkedIn were also caught in the iOS clipboard data gate, with many popular iPhone apps regularly reading the clipboard data in the background. Both apps have now removed the code, and in the new iOS 14 beta, the code that reads the user's clipboard raises a warning.

Apple's recently released iOS 14 beta iPhone may not have final code yet, but it's already making waves in the mobile app world. When an app is reading from your iPhone clipboard, the beta version of iOS 14 reminds users that the data on your iPhone clipboard will also be Shared with other Apple devices near you, and as a result, users find that a number of very popular apps are regularly reading from the user's clipboard. These may include all sorts of sensitive information, including bitcoin addresses and other financial data.

This is nothing new. Mysk researchers have been detailing the problem since before iOS 14 was released in March, though not every app that triggers an alert is reading clipboard data in a malicious way. But it is also of concern to users, especially as the number of apps that can trigger alerts continues to grow.

Late last week, developer Don Morton discovered that the iOS version of the official Reddit app is another app that will always check the user's clipboard data, even if the user doesn't ask it to. Reddit says a solution is in place.

A Reddit spokesman said: "We found an encoding program in the editor that looks at the URL in the paste board and suggests an article title based on the text content of the URL." "We do not store or send board content. We have removed this code and will release the patch on July 14."

Late last week, LinkedIn was also named as a offending user, and the company also promised a solution. Erran Berger, the company's vice President of consumer product engineering, said on Twitter on Friday: "We have traced a code path that only checks the clipboard content for equality with what is currently typed in the text box. We do not store or transfer clipboard content."

TikTok, the social video sensation, was the first big app to call for a fix, and the company said in March that it would, though it doesn't appear to have completely solved the problem. Because after the beta release of iOS 14, TikTok was once again the focus of complaints. A TikTok representative said last month that the code was being used as part of an anti-spam feature and that the company would indeed remove it in the near future.

Dozens of other popular apps and games, from the New York Times to PUBG Mobile, were also found to be illegal in March, and as of last week, only some had resolved the issue. Will public pressure and the upcoming final version of iOS 14, due this fall, prompt more developers to address privacy issues in their apps? We'll see.
