With BlockBeats, Twitter is following Github, which recently decided to remove the terms "master" and "Slave" from its code. On June 2, Twitter released a list of "non-inclusive" terms that are common in programming and will be removed from common terms. "Master" and "slave" will become "leader" and "Follower"; "Whitelist" will become "DenyList" and "guys" will become "Folks".
Under its new policy, Twitter will manually and automatically change its source code. The company's official engineering account, Twitter Engineering, wrote on Twitter: "Automated tools and shortboards are being developed to minimize the manual workload of developers."
"At Twitter, the language we use in our code does not reflect the values of our company or the people we serve. We want to change that," the account says. The post from the Twitter Engineering account went on to say that the change in terminology would take a long time to implement.
All existing internal documentation, design documentation, Google documentation, faqs, and online readmes will also be rewritten in the coming months. The move to remove such "non-inclusive" provisions was led by Regynald Augustin and Kevin Oliver, two Twitter employees, who said they were too closely related to dark periods in US history.
Many people disagree with Twitter's statement and changes. One commentator called it an attempt to make human behaviour dependent on external approval. Twitter user @awakeningwarri3 wrote: "Clearly this is trying to make humans too PC and think that recognition from the outside world is really important. We are not Twitter, we are not any government, we are not any ruler."
Another commenter said Twitter's move to appease the protest group was just a pr move. User @LiquidTravel wrote: "The fact there was no response suggests there was no real dedication behind the action. It's pure PR, nothing more."
Like it or not, "blacklist" and "whitelist" will soon be taken out of developers' development lexicon and turned into a loanword.
